Abstract. The winter hardiness of twenty six garden chrysanthemum cultivars in local climatic conditions in the ground under a thin layer of peat (winters 2000/2001, 2001/2002) or of bark (winter 2002/2003) were estimated. The winter hardiness was shown by only one, frost resistance by nine, rather resistant were eight cultivars, and other eight cultivars were sensitive to frost, especially ‘Knockout’.

Key words: Dendranthema, overwintering in ground

The winter hardiness of garden chrysanthemum cultivars (Dendranthema Des Moul) in Poznań climatic conditions

Summary

Three years (2001-2003) the winter hardiness of twenty six garden chrysanthemum cultivars in local climatic conditions were estimated. Before the winter stock plants in the ground were protected with a thin layer of high peat (winters 2000/2001, 2001/2002) or of bark (winter 2002/2003). Blooming shoots were not removed but left on the plants until spring. Winter hardiness was evaluated in the middle of May. The best overwintering ability was shown by ‘Ali Baba’. Nine cultivars proved to be frost-resistant, rather resistant were eight. Other eight cultivars survived, but were sensitive to frost, especially ‘Knockout’.
